AT A GLANCE

Eight air travel statistics worth knowing

Airline and airport totals are not interchangeable. Airline statistics count passengers carried on scheduled services, while airport totals describe passenger movements through airports. This page keeps those measures separate so each number can be used in the right context.

That was 7.9% higher than 2023, according to ICAO's preliminary annual compilation.

HOW TO READ THE NUMBERS

A quick note on the measures

Passengers carried

ICAO's scheduled-service total describes airline passengers. It is useful for understanding the scale of airline travel worldwide.

Airport passenger movements

ACI's airport total is a measure of traffic through airports. It is useful for understanding airport activity and is not a like-for-like substitute for airline passengers carried.

Passenger-kilometers

This measure combines people and distance traveled, so it helps show changes in total travel demand beyond a simple passenger count.

SOURCES AND METHOD

Built for clear attribution

This reference uses published data from the International Civil Aviation Organization, Airports Council International World, and the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Figures are shown as reported by those organizations, with the source date and period noted on each statistic. Some global figures are preliminary, exactly as their publishers describe them.
